The annual study about mobile life styles in Australia from AIMIA was just released. There were some new questions added to this year’s survey which are worth noting, especially with regards to data plans. Since bundled or “capped” plans as they are referred to here are quite popular, there are probably less pre-paid users than in a lot of other markets. This means the mobile operators push data plans and the survey shows that
* 31% of users have a data plan
* over 71% accessed content services on their phone
* 46% have paid for premium entertainment service or content, up from 34% last year
What is interesting to see is that those who had data plans typically opted for 0-50MB plans:
Amount of data included in payment options
However, of the people with data plans, a further 31% bought additional data during the month (or 18% as the survey’s figure and text are conflicting), and the majority spent up to $10 on this and they did so every month:
I will be posting an article on Monday which further speaks to the growth of mobile data, and surely the Aussie statistics in this regards are positive. A large part of the increase in data seems to be driven by the use of social network services, with 46% of those saying they use communications services access social network services on a daily basis:
Frequency of use as a percentage of those that used each specific communication service
Another somewhat curious fact was that those who owned Sony Ericsson and LG phones were likely to be single and living at home with their parents. Would be interesting to see stats from other markets on that one… 🙂
